A 19-year-old Filipino-Swiss scored victories in rounds 9 and 10 of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship over the weekend, becoming the first Pinoy to win such a race.
Marlon Stockinger raced for Atech GP and secured a lights-to-flag victory at the North Yorkshire’s Croft circuit on Saturday’s round 9, according to Renault Sport.co.UK.
A formula race starts with the opening of several lights and ends with the waving of a flag. Thus, the term lights-to-flag.
Stockinger’s first-ever podium was followed by a second-place finish during Sunday’s round 10, which was broadcast live over UK’s ITV4.
“Round nine was really nerve-wracking but I’m thrilled to finally secure a win especially given I’ve had a third place, a second place in the Winter Series, and now my first win,” said Stockinger.
He said he hopes to ride on his momentum going into the next rounds of the race.
“This weekend has been a huge confidence boost for me though and I’m looking forward to the next rounds,” he said.
Stockinger, son of Swiss racing enthusiast and businessman Tom Stockinger, grew up in the Philippines until he was 17, after which he left for Europe to pursue his racing career. His mother is a Filipina.
Prior to his victories over the weekend, Stockinger finished 25th in last season’s Formula Renault.
Rounds 11 and 12 of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship will take place at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit in August.
The 20-round formula series will run until October.
The series is one of the most competitive Formula Renault championships and there are some notable Formula One Drivers who have raced in the series, like Kimi Räikkönen, Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen. —
